Many of the tiny whitewashed houses clinging precipitously to the crater’s rim were hacked straight from the volcanic rock: today these “cave dwellings” have been converted into some of the finest and most luxurious accommodation you will find anywhere; all of it small, exclusive and intimate. Much of Santorini’s hotel and apartment accommodation is concentrated in the three closely neighbouring villages of Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli and in Oia, at the northernmost tip of the island: all share the same awe-inspiring view.

Historians will find the sites of Akrotiri and Ancient Fira fascinating, others will enjoy visiting the old port at the foot of the cliffs, either by cable car, donkey or on foot, whilst those with more cosmopolitan tastes will enjoy browsing in the many boutiques and jewellery stops of lively Fira, which really buzzes at night with a wealth of restaurants, bars and nightclubs to suit all tastes.
