Stunning Samos Town is built around a large horseshoe-shaped bay and is an ideal base for sampling all that Samos has to offer, whether you plan to just enjoy the town or visit as many beaches, villages and rustic tavernas as you possibly can.
At the bustling harbour front you will find a range of authentic kafenion and seafood tavernas where you can watch the fishing fleet return with the days catch. Afterwards, bury yourself in the much-acclaimed archeological museum, with display artefax that illustrate trade links between Samos and the Nile Valley from as far back as the 8th century BC.
For treasures of a different kind, pick up Samiot wine (Samina Golden is quite delicious) and honey at the market or shop at the countless elegant boutiques and gift stores.
When you need to just relax, the town's small pebble beach is a restful little haven. But for days out, take a bus or hire a car to the sandy beaches at nearby Psili Ammos or Kalami.
Alternatively, immerse yourself in Samos' lush interior, enjoying the leafy mountain tavernas at Manolates and Vourliotes, peaceful fishing hamlets and magnificent walking terrain.
Return to Samos Town by sunset and visit a friendly waterfront taverna for an authentic, home-cooked Greek supper, followed by a metaxa to seal the day.
One of the loveliest and sheltered bays on Samos - Kerveli lies just 8km from Samos Town. The narrow road down to the bay winds through beautiful wooded countryside and olive groves. Three excellent, friendly tavernas, a sprinkling of villas and apartments and one hotel, a shingle beach with a line of tamarisk trees and turquiose sea, all against a backdrop of forested hills - this is Kerveli.
The mini market can be found at Paleokastro, which is a short drive away, the village also boasts of a couple of tavernas and cafenions, and an excellent bakery. There is also a large supermarket on the outskirts of Samos Town - this can be easily reached by car or taxi in around 10 minutes. The countryside is perfect for walkers and there are other tiny coves nearby that offer complete seclusion.
