Samos is a mountainous, wooded island, with great archaeological interest. The northern coast, where the capital Vathi is situated, is quiet precipitous and rocky, though it has a undiscribable wild beauty. The south coast has many beautiful beaches with crystal clear waters. Samos has always been known for its fertility and its traditional products such as the typical samos sweet wine, which is very popular to all visitors!

Finds from the New Stone Age prove that Samos was inhabited as early as 3000B.C. Samos was settled by Ionians who came from Mycenae on the Peloponnese. A prehistoric settlement dating from the 3rd millenium B.C. has been discovered in the region Tigani.

Another such settlement was located in the area where the famous Temple of Hera is stood. During the second world war Samos was heavily bombarded, but the resistance movement was strong, contributing greatly towards the national effort. When the war ended there was a new start at rehabilation and restoration of its small but prosperous industries, among them ship-building, wine making and olive oil production.

The Ancients called Samos "isle of the blessed". With its tiny terracotta-roofed villages and endless beaches, it's easy to see why... Samos is a simply beautiful, charming, unspoiled, refreshingly and wonderfully relaxing island. Hills rise and fall like a blanket unfurling over a fresh bed, their slopes alive with pastel-hued grasses and flowers.

The reflections of brightly coloured fishing boats dance on the water's surface which barely ripples in a gentle sea breeze, and beaches gleam in the sunlight, washed by a blue and infinite sea.  Enjoy a lunch of freshly cooked seafood and afterwards strike out along meandering paths, through flower-dusted woods to discover your own secret cave.

As the sun sets, you can almost feel the spirits of old heroes amid shadowy ruins alive with legend. Terracotta roofs glow, quaysides and elegant squares come alive with voices and laughter, the air rich with the heady smells of sizzling herbs and thick, fruity wines.
