Pythagorio

Built on the ruins of the ancient city of Samos during the time of Polycrates, Pythagorio condenses more than twenty six centuries of Greek history. The town used to be known as Tigani, because of its shape, but later was named after the mathematician Pythagoras.

Many yachts and sailing boats moor here in the large, picturesque harbour. The harbour, with its tavernas, coffee-shops and tables set out under the trees on one side, fishermen, caiques and yachts of all sizes on the other, could be described as the quintessential scene of a Greek island.

Licourgo Castle stands above the town and the airport is about 3 km away. There are serveral archeological sites in the area. The most impressive being the ancient Temple of Hera and Evfpalinus Tunnel both dating back from the 6th century.

We recommend car hire to allow you to explore the island in full.
