Gaios is the largest of the three towns on the island and during the summer months, yachts and cruisers line the harbour in front of the many cafes, tavernas, bars and restauraunts that nestle between the the neo-classical buildings that characterise this enchanting town.
Overlooking the waterfront lies the main square, fringed with bars where visitors and locals meet over a glass of ouzo or strong Greek coffee. Whitewashed alleys lead off the main square filled with shops where you will find good pottery and fine jewellery.
From the harbour boats depart for the beautiful white sandy beaches of Anti Paxos, while the town’s pretty white pebble beach is just a few minutes walk.
The road south out of Gaios takes you round the headland to a narrow strip of pebble beach at Plakes, a longer stone strand at Defteri and another around the headland at Ballos. A little further on is the tiny fishing port of Aghia Marina where at the end of the beach there is an early Christian church.
North of Gaios the road loops around the headland with fine views across the Panagia islet to the port at Geromonachus where ferries from Corfu, Parga and Igoumenitsa dock.
A sharp turn north takes the road along the coast past pebble strands at Kioni and Kamini before turning inland again. Here a track leads down to the beautiful sheltered beach at Kaki Langanda set in a very pretty bay. The beach is dominated by a large villa and a beach cantina opens in the summer.
