Right at the southern tip of Kefalonia, surrounded by rural scenery, is the snoozy resort of Katelios. Holidays here may provoke a yawn from party people … but if you're looking for somewhere laid-back and lovely, with ample tavernas and space to just chill, holidays in Katelios will suit you down to the ground.

Starting at the sea – the beginning, middle and end of many a relaxing break here – the resort boasts a broad bay, catching the best of the morning sun. Its sand and pebble beach shelves gently into the shallows and looks across to Zante and mainland Killini. And there's more for summer holidays to Katelios … snorkelling from the rocks at the edge of the bay or sharing Turtle Beach with … well, turtles. Heading inland, passing the wild roses and eucalyptus trees which fringe the bay, and the local tavernas specialise in fresh fish straight from the loacl boats.  Behind the village the fairly flat plains are home to olive groves and citrus orchards, dotted here and there with little villas and more tavernas.

For something a touch livelier, there are cafés, bars and watersports at Skala – just up the coast.
