Ormos and Koumbara

Ormos harbour, nestled just below Chora, is one of the largest natural harbours in the Aegean and for most people is your first port of call on the island - it is where the ferry arrives from Santorini.

The main plaza has a wide range of tavernas, shops and bars and at the far end of the marina there is a traditional fishing quay where you will still find the fishermen fixing their nets.

The 17th century chapel of Agia Irini famous for its two altars is to the south of the harbour.

From the harbour there are a number of walking routes up to Chora, the beaches at Kolitsani, the hill village of Kambos and the ruins at Skarkos.

The long sandy beach is a an alternative to Mylopotas beach which can be busier in July and August. There are also excursion boats that line the harbour and will take you to the islands beaches or to neighbouring islands.

South of Ormos is a beautiful stretch of coastline with small coves and sandy beaches called Koumbara or Koubara.  The main beach is about 300m long and has a good selection of beachfront tavernas, but the delight here is to get out and walk around the headland.  This is also a great place for snorkelling.

Koumbara is within walking distance from Ormos (30 minutes) however, there is also a regular bus service which takes approximately 5 minutes.
