Chora

Chora is the traditional settlement of the island – and is around 200m above sea level – perched on the clifftops overlooking the Aegean.  The meandering streets and alleyways along with the numerous small squares all containing whitewashed buildings are a distinctive trait of the Cycladic islands.

The village is one of the oldest medieval settlements within the Cyclades, and has now been pedestrianised completely within the walls of the Kastro.  There are plenty of shady areas provided by the trees and the village is a perfect spot to unwind and people watch.  In the height of the summer, Chora comes to life once the sun has set.  The tavernas and bars offer the perfect spot for an aperitif and dinner in one of the squares.  There is a fairly lively bar scene – famous for live music which can continue until the sun comes up on the morning afterwards.

The view from the village is breathtaking and endless – offering the ideal scenery for photographers, from the end of the main street – the Pounta, from within the walls of the churches or from the balconies and terraces of the buildings within the village.
