Vamos and surrounding villages
Situated on the peninsula of land between Chania and Rethymnon lies the village of Vamos which offers the opportunity to sample authentic Crete. A number of properties have been sympathetically restored and renovated and are now charming guesthouses or cottages offering an excellent standard of accommodation in a variety of nearby locations. Historical buildings have been converted into a cafe and a local handicraft shop. The village taverna serves delicious traditional Cretan recipes. There are several walking routes in the area and it's a real chance to sample an almost forgotten way of life.
The area around Vamos is a lush landscape a few kilometres from the coast. It is a working village and a good base to explore the surrounding villages of Gavalohori, Kalives, Douliana or Tzivaras.
Douliana is 2 km from Vamos towards Kalives, and is a traditionally protected village with hidden corners and peaceful nature. The village is the start of a footpath which in years gone by connected Douliana with Gavalochori, and which passes through a small gorge, a forest, and the spectacular chapel of Agios Gianis (St. John), built inside a cave. The village is 100 meters above sea level, and has around 40 houses. In total it's home to a population of around 200. It has a cosy square with one local cafe and a mini market and a pleasant taverna.
Tsivaras is a small village just between Vamos and Kalives. It is built on a hill beautiful views over the sea and the olive groves. The village has a small cafe and a mini market. Other facilities - additional shops and other services in Kalives just 3km away or Vamos, also 3km away.
This is an excellent location to enjoy nearby beaches and explore Chania, Rethymnon and many interesting villages all within an hour's drive.
Vamos and the villages in the surrounding area are known as a traditional destination, where one can be immersed in the real authentic Crete, relax, and under no pressure, combine holiday entertainment and culural activities. The area offers stone and wood Cretan village cottages, natural honey and virgin olive oil, flagstone village paths and the beautiful local countryside where flowers bloom and the locals drink coffee or 'tsikoudia' at the village kafenion and tavernas, combined with the stunning beaches of the northern coast of Crete.
