Georgioupolis, Almirida and Kalives
Georgioupolis lies at the northern coast of Crete, about 35km away from Chania and 20 km from Rethymnon. It is a coastal village situated at the bay of Almiros.
The long stretches of golden sandy beaches in front of the village, the lake of Kournas close by and the proximity of the cities of Chania and Rethymnon, make it an ideal location for visitors wishing to explore the surrounding area. There are excursions by small boats to the surrounding beaches and a small road train.
Almirida (also known as Almyrida) is a pretty seaside village towards the eastern end of Souda Bay. Around 15 miles from Chania, the resort boasts an impressive crescent shaped bay and a good selection of tavernas, restaurants and shops which stretch throughout the village. Not too long ago,. Almirida was a fishing village and a weekend retreat for the inhabitants of Chania. over the intervening period, Almirida has grown into a small resort with a number of villas, apartments and small family run hotels. Despite its growth, the resort remains popular with Greeks and many still maintain weekend homes in or around the village.
In the village you will find several mini markets as well as a bakers. If you feel the need to communicate with the outside world, there is an internet cafe. The wooded countryside behind Almirida is some of the most beautiful in Crete and a walkers paradise, especially in April and May when its not too hot and the spring flowers are on show. Mountain bikes can be hired locally. There is also a reasonable bus service if you wish to venture further.
Despite its growth, Almirida has, thankfully, managed to retain a laid back, yet very friendly atmosphere.
Just 4km from Almirida, back towards Chania, is Kalives. This is one of Crete's most charming and unspoilt resorts - still retaining the feel of a sleepy Greek village but at the same time offering all of the facilities required in modern holiday resorts.
The long beach is a fine stretch of sand, overlooked by the Apokorona fortress, built by the Genoese when they attempted to steal the island from the Venetians.
The sand is soft and taverna tables line thebeach between shady tamarind trees.
In the evening there is a good selection of tavernas offering authentic Cretan cuisine, fresh seafood and a reasonable helping of international fare.
Holidays in Kalives will attract those who wish to spend time in a genuine working village which is not just a tourist invention, but which still caters very well for the tourist.
