Ermones and Paleokastritsa
Ermones is a small cove that nestles between dramatic hills with only a small number of apartments and luxury hotels. The predominantly sandy beach (a few shingle patches) is gently sloping and suitable for children. As Ermones lies at the base of a steeply sided valley there are numerous steps down to the beach although the luxury hotels do have cable cars down the valley sides to reach the beach area. Boardwalks line the beach
There are three beachside tavernas offering everything from snacks and drinks to full meals. There are a further 3 tavernas up above in the village. The tavernas double up as beachside bars during the evening. There is one supermarket in the village.
It is reputed that Odysseus, the hero of Homer’s Odyssey, was washed ashore in this cove after being shipwrecked, only to be awoken by the princess Nausicca and a number of maidens.
Paleokastritsa has long been considered one of the most beautiful villages in Corfu and is a renowned Greek beauty spot. Paleokastritsa is chiefly memorable for the excepcional scenery along with the superb beaches.
While staying in Paleokastritsa you can swim at six different secluded sand and fine pebble beaches enclosed by tall cliffs, wooded headlands, olive groves, lemon and cypress trees and lush hilly countryside.
Paleokastritsa is situated 16 miles north-west of Corfu's attractive capital, Corfu Town. The resort runs along the coast road that winds among the cliffs and sheltered bays. It is a hilly place full of twists and turns and unexpected views.
As well as the beaches, there is a
monastery perched high on the clifftop. Snorkelling and diving from the rocks into the clear waters is a real pleasure. There are water-taxis available to the vast beach at Aghios Georgios. Spend your evenings in the tavernas and good selection of bars or treat yourself by dining at the smattering of more expensive restaurants. Quality seafood is widely available. Buses do run to Corfu town (Kerkyra) and exchange facilities are available, with credit cards widely accepted.
