Paros and Anti-Paros Activities
Water sports Paros’ lovely sandy beaches mean that there is good swimming everywhere, with a water sports centre, nestled amongst the unusual rock formations of sheltered Kolimbithres Bay, providing the usual range of water activities: water skiing, wakeboarding and inflatable fun. There are also two dive schools on the island. The island’s east coast beaches have become a Mecca for windsurfers and kite surfers. Pounta has the distinction of being Europe’s top kite surfing centre, whilst Chryssi Akti has hosted world windsurfing championships. Piso Livadi, Santa Maria and Molos are also hot spots for these sports. Even if you don't plan to try it for yourself, the spectacle – on days when the wind is strong – of a flotilla of brightly coloured sails and wings flying at high speed across the water is something that should not be missed. Be sure to take your camera! Walking & exploringFor walkers, there are some pleasant trails across the gently hilly interior of the island, taking you through tiny villages and past small churches and monasteries. The island can also be explored by rental car, coach tour or on horseback. A visit to Petaloudes (“Valley of the Butterflies”) is an experience you should not miss. From May to July the valley is filled with Jersey tiger moths; tours by mule are available. The main town of Parikia, with its maze of dazzling white buildings and Naoussa, a pretty little port filled with brightly coloured fishing boats, are both picture postcard perfect and worthy of many hours spent wandering their narrow streets. Boat toursThe neighbouring island of Antiparos is just a short boat ride across the 1.5km channel from Pounta, or a longer voyage from Parikia. This pretty island is easy to explore and has good sandy beaches, but the main point of a visit here is usually to see the stalagmites and stalactites of the famous cave. Take walking shoes, as it is a half hour’s walk up the hill to the cave. Despite its small size, Antiparos has its own dive centre and guided kayaking tours of the island are offered. As on Naxos, day trips to other Cycladic islands can be arranged. On twin centre holidays, Paros can be combined with Amorgos, Athens, Folegandros, Ios, Koufonisia, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos and Santorini. The choice is yours.
